Winnipeg: Canada’s Bingo Capital City
One bingo hall for every 19,000 people
A study was made recently, by BingoLingo, to determine which Canadian city was the one where Bingo was most important, and it was Manitoba’s capital, Winnipeg, who came in first place.

The chief director of the research, Jeff Davis, said: “We found that Winnipeg has more bingo halls per capita than the larger cities, such as Vancouver and Toronto. What was surprising is that Winnipeg’s attendance hasn’t seemed to drop off since smoking was banned.”

The study showed that while Toronto has one bingo hall for every 131,000 residents, Winnipeg has one bingo hall for every 19,000 residents, which supports the above statement. These numbers came up from looking at each and every bingo licence registered in the city.

The exact reason as to why bingo is so popular in Winnipeg remains uncertain; what’s true is that there are two factors that help the game’s popularity: on one hand, the city’s cold climate, and on the other, the existance of a large population of Roman and Ukranian Catholic churches, which often use bingo for fundraising and sometimes even host them in the church’s basement.
