A bill that would not allow charities to get new video bingo machines was killed by the House gambling oversight committee in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. With the current session ending June 28th, there probably won’t be enough time to discuss it any further.
Video bingo machines function in a way that resembles slots. For this reason, video bingo machines are employed in places where gambling is not legal but bingo is. In the state of Louisiana, charitable bingo games have been allowed for decades. Now those charities have started to use Cadillac Jack video bingo machines.
“You have to call it what it is, if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck,” said Ed Biersmith, who traveled from Monroe to support the bill. Machines are becoming more and more popular, with millions invested in charitable bingo halls to add this kind of equipment.
The Senate had voted 27-10 in favor of the bill last week. Had it been passed, it would be effective starting August 15th. What Sen. Mike Michot, described as “an attempt to stop what I appreciate is an expansion of gambling” will probably have to wait until the next session.
